Hello to everybody,

This is my first post because errors is not something I know a lot about.I hope that one of your members can help.I have aquired a one Euro coin (Italian 2002)which not does not have the second metal insert. It is all one color. It does not appear to have been manipulated in any way.I have included an image and would appreciate any info, rarity, value etc.

Thanks

Eoin

I would assume it's simply been plated, or perhaps been in some strange chemical environment (seawater, chlorinated poolwater, laundry detergent, etc) that changed the colour of both alloys. If it had been struck on a non-bimetallic wrong planchet, you wouldn't see the inner circle on the reverse (map) side at all.

Hello and welcome! Unless the piece has an altered surface (this could be a manipulation or is, on rare occasions, done by stores for promotion purposes), the stamp and the planchet do not match.

This is a €1 (old) design struck using a non-bimetallic planchet (possibly that of a 50 cent coin). Pretty much like yours: http://www.errorcoins.eu/Bild125.jpg

And this would be the opposite, so to say - a 50 cent (old) design on a €1 planchet: http://www.errorcoins.eu/50c_on_1e.jpg

Don't know about the value since I do not collect such error coins either, sorry. Some are listed here http://www.sammler.com/mz/euro_abarten_italien.htm (that is the page for Italian euro coins) but they are careful regarding the possible value/price ...

Ha, Sap was faster. According to this page http://www.sammler.com/mz/euro_abar...schungen.htm you can get the monocolor effect by using acetic acid 25%, or exposing the coin to warm sodium hydroxide (caustic soda?) with zinc, and then holding it in a gas flame. You can even change the color of such a bi-met piece by putting it on a hotplate (no flame). I have no experience with that though ...

I figure it has probably been messed with, but weighing it should tell for sure. Get the weight of a normal piece, then weigh this one. If it's within a couple tenths of a gram, it's been messed with. If it's off, then it could be something more.
