I know honesty is usually best but has anyone every tried a cover story when trying to get coin rolls/boxes/bags?
I wouldn't suggest trying this at your personal bank but maybe a bank you don't have an account with.
My cover story I thought up is I'm a student in a statistic class and as a project were trying to estimate the amount of copper cent there are left in circulation compared to zinc cents.
Any one else every tried this?
Also I don't condon lying but this seems like a harmless lie to me...

You think banks don't know what you're doing? Respect their intelligence, tell the truth.

Best to tell the truth. Tellers are a lot more accommodating when you do. If you really want to build a good CRH relationship with tellers, introduce yourself, tell the truth, be polite, and bring them treats on occasion. You may find they will even look out for older coins for you.

Most banks provide zero services to non account holders. So no matter how polite you are or no matter how tasty those treat may be.... you still wont get anything from them. I don't have a local bank. I us USAA, so I have no where to get coins. We have a personal loan through a local bank and I was able to get $10 in pennies once. But other then that it's very hard to get coins. Even most businesses around here won't sell coin rolls.
I know how to play the be nice game to tellers. I lived in South Dakota and my wife had a friend that worked at a bank that would help out.
Like I said, it was just an idea and I wouldn't suggest someone doing it to a bank they actually have an account with...

I've generally only asked at banks I have accounts with, but I've picked up box at td bank while telling them I have no account and I have also found supermarket banks to have no problem providing some rolls (never asked for more than 10)

It might not be lying if you were actually reporting your statistics to the "class" here at CCF. Kidding aside, it is easier to remember the truth.

When I first started I was guilty of making up lies, like wanting to pay friend back in $50 of cents or x amount of halves. That all stopped when the teller was like you probably don't want these old halves (franklins) then and I have not fibbed since. Statistics project would work, but I don't think you need a story for it to work.

Banks and CU s have for the most part no time for CRH. They cost them both time and money. Support your local coin shop or show and dive through junk boxes.

Why "lie" when you can tell the truth.
Right now whenever I ask for any coins I say that "I'm doing coin collecting", which is entirely true for all the denominations I search. I have three banks I go to and they all give me the coins if they have enough.

The only coin store in town is ran by a really old cranky rude guy. I read reviews about the store but gave it a chance and went in.. Reviews were spot on. He acts like he's put out that you're in his store. He has so much stuff piled up you can barely walk around. I do attend the annual coin show in town, but its annual. So a lot of time between it

Like everyone else, tell the truth. If you go more than once they will know that you search coins and might reduce/ban you from their coins.

American CRH'ers have a far easier time with the banks than Australian CRH'ers do. Australian tellers come up with all sorts of excuses not to supply, if they suspect that you are using their time for no benefit to the bank.

after 5 years of doing this, I don't need a cover story, the banks just call me directly asking how much I want, or I got silver dollars do you want them. I cannot stress this enough, it is always about the relationship with your tellers.

Interesting.. at my bank I can ask for boxes and rolls and I've never been given a sideways glance. I even return the coins to the same bank, again with no issues. Now admittedly, they do have a coin sorter on the main floor. So I can take the coins there, let the sorter do the work and then I present them with a ticket and get the cash back in bills. Are there any others who have a similar setup.
I'm glad I don't have to play games with it. That could get tedious for me.

That's exactly what I do, and it works like a charm. I have always been open to the tellers and management why I roll hunt, and they have no problem at all. I can't see the point in making up a story if there is no reason to. CRH isn't illegal, although it can be addicting!
