I can buy it for $180 from Craigslist, or maybe make an offer, perhaps $150. Interesting deal. Sure fun to think about. Melt value is around $80, then the 1921 and 1921-S add a lot of value too. (If the 21 and 21-S are VG or better, or if there are a lot of AU/BU coins, will make a big difference) What are your thoughts?

I think that I would want to see the coins in person before I make an offer. Do you have nay pictures from the listing? Since you said there are many AU/BU coins in the set this could be a winner. Also, I think you meant 1921 and 1921-D dimes. There were no 1921-S dimes produced.

Yes, I would have to see them in person. The only pictures in the listing were of the closed albums (he had about 12 or so, many types from cents to halves, etc.) Oh yes, 1921-D. Tried to edit my post but was too late. I didn't say there are AU/BU coins, just suggested that if there are, I might pay more than if not. The most important factor is probably the condition of the 1921 and 1921-D. If they are VG or better, or if there are some AU/BU coins, I would go at least $150, maybe $180.

Just for reference, ebay retail on a set like that is $200-250.

Thanks, KenKat. Unless they are in horrible shape, at $180 is not a bad price. I would like to flip it at a coin show or ebay. If I buy the set, I won't have any coin funds for a while, so I plan to only buy it if I really like the conditions, especially 1921 and 1921-D

Quote: I think that I would want to see the coins in person before I make an offer. Agreed. The condition of the 1921, 1921-D, and 1926-S dimes will determine most of the value beyond melt.

Assuming the '21, '21-D and '26-S are not in good shape, I wouldn't do more than $100 or so.

You have to figure at junk price you can buy 76 mercs for 15x = $114, so it comes down to value of the keys.
I've been putting a set together through junk finds and down to about final 20 with buying them in fairly good shape for 1.30 to 1.60 each depending on size of lot and quality.

I'm obviously missing the 16d and 21, 21d and 26s
I'm thinking this set has growth potential as in the next 10-20 years as these coins keep getting 100+ years old that they'll be pulled out of normal junk pile and have an added premium, but maybe my theory is wrong bc eventually all pre-65 90% will be more than 100 years old and I'd imagine there will always be junk?

Due too low funds until I sell about 50 oz. of scrap silver at a coin show next month, I am feeling less inclined to buy the dimes (likely a decent, but not outstanding deal) ,as I have been finding excellent deals on silver jewelry and a few coins at estate sales, and want to have some cash for that in the next few weeks.

Might be a better deal than most think. Don't forget most don't know about the 19 Double Die. Most don't know about other Doubled ones either. Some may put a 42/41 in place of a 42 not knowing. And pending condition, the 31D and 31S are among the lowest mintage in the series. And you may have the 45 Micro S in that set. Could well be worth a look.

Getting pics of obv. and rev. of all the coins in album might not be feasible for seller. if your able to , I would go to location where the mercs are. checking them in hand, if feasible for you.

Craigslist scares me at times. Are you planning meeting somewhere in a public place. That would be smart considering the amount of cash involved. Lots of stories about people getting scammed via this situation. Dansco Album too is worth about $30+ so when you think about the cost of the Dimes, your getting a really decent deal.

It is local, so I would go in person to see the coins up close. I would meet in a public place, yes. Thanks everyone for the comments and advice. I have done about 10 Craigslist deals with good success (well under melt for US 90%, Canadian 80% and .925 proofs, Venezuelan Bolivars, etc.), have posted about some of them in the precious metals forum. The seller had 26(!) Dansco albums listed (more than I thought) I read the listed coins for each, and most albums were priced a bit high, but not so high that a little bargaining might not result in a nice deal. I will keep you posted, but I may wait a month or so until I have more free cash, and by then they may be sold.
