Just thought I'd post this for opinions, an auction that both intrigues but also ought to give pause. FR02 if it's real (and that'd be the real question).

I really like that coin. Looks real to me and a possible lowball. Maybe others will chime in and agree or disagree.

edit: On second though, not sure of lowball because can't tell if there is a mint mark.

Remarkable coin for sure. But I agree with edweather that it is probably ungradeable.

Just from the standpoint of the auction itself, there're things that set off alarms for me. I hate it when the seller professes ignorance about the item, and is vague as to its provenance as well. This seller also doesn't offer a return privilege. The pictures are inadequate. And finally, about one out of eight of his feedbacks have been negative.

With respect to the coin itself, it looks honestly circulated, but in what circumstance does it get that worn? It'd likely be chopped if it had been in the Chinese trade, so where was it so much used up in commerce?

Remember the Trade dollar was worth less than face value in the US. I can imagine a scenario where person received a Trade dollar in change. The person then went to pay for goods or services only to discover that its value is 75 to 80 cents (or whatever the value was) instead of taking a loss they held on to it.
