So just realized one of the junk silver quarters I bought was a type 1. Most probably 1917, but is there way to tell? I don't think so but thought I'd ask. And unfortunately can't really get any better pics. Thanks for your help!

No, there isn't.

However, there are threads on CCF that delve into the diagnostics on 1916/1917 SLQ's. There are subtle differences that can be seen --- even on well worn coins like yours --- that will help you determine the date.

Good luck!

1917. The rivets on the shield would be non-existant and the lines in the walls on both sides of Liberty would not be as bold. nlp

Gotcha. I couldn't quite tell from the lines but I can see the difference in the shield. Thanks NLP!

Do the strong rivets indicate the coin is a 1917?

Yes looking at pictures between the two, it seems the rivets are the small circle things on the shield and are more... Circly basically then the 1916 which appear more like squares. Please correct me if I'm wrong on that one

I'm not sure if there are the same amount of rivets on both dates or not. The shield design however is different in so far as the wear pattern will obliterate the rivets on the 1916 and the 1917 will have a few in a protected zone. nlp
