A cross-post, I have put the same coin in the grading forum.
Mostly for those who haven't seen one, this is a decent example of an 1849 Gothic Florin (that I have acquired).

This is the kind more normally called the "godless florin", is it not?

G'day, yes it is the famous "Godless Florin", a one-year type, and the first U.K. florin.
But, remain calm: God was restored soon after.
The Gothic series, with God, continued upto 1887.
I haven't researched the point, but it seems that this portrait of QV was only used on the florin: the "young head" and "bun head" remaining in service for 50 years.
A similar portrait was used on Indian coins.

NMUK, if you do not mind, what does a coin like this typically sell for?

Jim, I am not certain due to the price guides not being perfect, this is the first of this coin I've tried to buy so I didn't get to study average prices but I paid aroun £25 including postage for it - may have got lucky or this may be normal for ebay I can't say.
In any case, these are the average values quoted from Collectors Coins GB 2007;
Gothic Florin 1849 F= £20 VF = £35 EF = 100 UNC/BU = 165/250
And Florin mintage for this year was 413, 830

This portrait of Victoria was used on the Gothic Crown in 1847 - preceding the florin. The crown also occurs dated 1853 but is rare.

The crown is a very attractive coin especially in very high grades.

I don't collect English coins of this period, but I've always have a softy spot for the gothic crown and florins.

The florin was an early attempt at decimalisation. It wasn't until 1971 that the process completed.

John.

Spot on.

If you like the Gothic portrait of Victoria in this coin, here is a modern reproduction of it on a test/fantasy piece for what was at the time expected to be the European Currency - the 'ecu' (Acronym for European Currency Unit)
