Gold always gives me trouble for some reason. Then you add the incused design and I lose my mind. For that reason alone I typically stick to slabbed gold, but if a deal pops up and it's a a safe risk I'll jump on raw stuff. So what is the opinion on this one? I know the hit by the L in liberty takes away any ms chances.

A hit shouldn't effect an MS vs circulated grade. In this case it almost looks like a strikethrough. Your coin appears MS to me and probably a 62 or 63. How's the luster?

Luster is good. I picked this one up with a 1 dollar and 5 dollar gold piece. I've been wanting a decent quarter eagle to replace a "lost" one that was supposed to be mine when my grandmother passed away. I paid basically melt for the three coins so it was a no brainer. The more I've been looking at this one though it just keeps looking better and better. I am wanting a second opinion as my vision is getting clouded so to speak.

Considering I'm still learning on grading these, and have never (under my knowledge) handled one raw and graded it, I'm going to say AU-55

Grade AU-55. But I'm not 100% sure this one is genuine. I don't like the depression in the coin going through the middle of all the feathers. I'm also seeing bumps in the surfaces indicating possible casting.

Surfaces look a little rough but this coin seems to be a close match to certified examples of this date on Heritage. If it's a counterfeit it is a good one. Check the weight; should be very close to 4.18 grams. Details are close to mint state but not quite IMO.

Odd how that mark by L of LIBERTY looks just like a D mintmark. Anyone ever heard of a "dropped letter" error on a gold coin?
