AVrum (latin) is gold.
The AVreus (aureus) was a Roman gold coin.

The coin is a Guinea worth 21 silver shillings, not a sovereign (20 shillings).

Pity about the grade G-06, which indicates that it is very worn.

It may be a jeweller's copy made of a lesser alloy of gold, and as such, may have seen use as a jewellry piece, probably in a pendant.

The date, 1788, is the first year of British settlement in Sydney, Australia. Australia Day, 26th Jaunary, which is an Ausralian Public Holiday, celebrates this event.

It would be better marketed in Australia, but at the grade of G-06, would not bring much more the nett gold value.

AV is an abbreviation derived from the Latin AVREVM, meaning gold.

The coin in question (assuming it is authentic) would properly be called a Guinea; with a face value fixed at 21 shillings as opposed the 20 shillings of the later Sovereign coins. The first modern sovereigns were struck in 1817 after the discontinuation of the guinea.

You can read more about them here: http://www.coins-of-the-uk.co.uk/sov.html

Note that there exist numerous contemporary brass imitations of this period of guinea that were used as gaming tokens. These pieces will usually carry incorrect legends and are thus easily identifiable.

Could we, by any chance, see a few pictures of the piece?

Thank you all for your helpful comments. I don't think it's gold as it is of a brassy color.

Oh well. Contemporary counterfeits are still interesting.
