Good morning! So I received this from my grandfather's estate about 20 years ago, he likely picked it up while serving in the Navy during WWII. What it is has been a conundrum ever since. It's actually a goldish (maybe brass?) color, but this B&W variant seems to show the details better than color. I've taken it to a few coin shops and shows over the years and been given a variety of answers, but nothing yet that has even pointed me in the right direction. Anyone here seen this before? Thanks for the help :)

i searched a bit for you because I thought it was french and it is

this explains the cros and the letters around and in it

then I found a guy who is selling one on a belgium site and he states this is a 1650 medal/token from france
