Lately, I've had no luck getting some older 5 dollar bills at the bank. They had one last time, but other banks I go to never have any. Yet I see people spending them all the time. Is this another case of "mattress money" that they've been holding onto for several years?

Well, the last ones were printed October 2007, so they're getting scarcer and scarcer. Almost all of the ones I see are getting pretty worn out.
Rest in Peace

A few months ago the Dollar General had an FJ..A 2003A $5 in the register. I handed the lady five $1 bills and happily EMSed that uncolored Abe.

Right now I have a BF45207189A $10 bill from series 1999.

Are the big Abe and other pics really worth keeping? I have a small Jackson Series 1985* I had been using as a bookmark back in 2004, but are people keeping the larger portraits just because they are pre-Monopoly money?

*from Kansas City so it is a J for Jackson serial number

Every once in a blue moon you can find an old Abe. A few years ago, I found a series of 1928 five dollar bill in circulation.

I think the uncolored 5s come in waves. I recently picked up 4 of them from 2 banks, and all of them are fairly circulated.

I picked up 4 today, 1 2003, 2 2003A, and 1 2006. Two are in typical shape of any uncolored 5 I get, 1 is in somewhat decent condition, and one is REALLY ratty, probably wouldn't survive inspection if I didn't pick it up.

The top one is probably in F-XF condition, while the bottom one is ripped down the center and the worn out one I was talking about.
