OK so like everything else I am way late to the free silver party since it looks like y'all have already scooped them all up. I'm still intrigued and winter is coming so I'll have time to kill in the evening and on weekends. I've done a little research: My current bank, extremely customer oriented BofA , will not charge me for ordering rolls or for depositing rolls. They will not accept unrolled coins. Good news is there is a branch about every ten miles. There are tons of TD branches around me and they all seem to have the penny arcade machines free to customers. I could open a savings account there and dump in their machines. I may even be willing to go through the slight hassle of switching all of my banking to TD. I hit 7 banks in the Morrisville/Oxford Valley Pa area today and asked if they had any 50 cent pieces (2 BofA, 2 TD, 1WF, and 2 local). 5 banks had zip in trays and rolls, one bank had 1 in the tray, and the third said one of the tellers had some to come back tomorrow. The one local bank said they rarely have them because they have regulars who come in and get them all the time. So it seems if I want to CRH halves I'm going to have to order a box of $500 to start. I'd like to hear what advice y'all have or answers: 1 Is there any silver left? 2 Are dimes or quarters more fruitful? 3 Should I stick to pennies and look for that 1955 DD 4 Go for nickel rolls since nobody wants them and I'll find tons of War Nickels5 What kind of gadget is best for viewing coins close up? (I need glasses to read and a dollar store Magnifying glass doesn't help me much) I could comfortably tie up about $1,000 in coin at any one time if that matters. I would try to do the dimes, as they will usually have more silver in them than quarters. Pennies and nickels are pretty much guaranteed to have pre 1960 coins in them, so they're good for beginners, and dumping at TD might work since they have coin counting machines. It's all up to you in the end.

Welcome to fhe forums!
Regarding CRH, I believe that pennies and quarters are the best ones to look through. You can get a whole lot of wheat cents and every now and then a proof quarter and a silver one. I don't have much experience with halves, only done 1 box so far. Dimes produced me just one silver after 12 or so boxes, therefor, I would not recommend them. Finding silver in nickels can take a bit because you have to look at the actual date in order to distinguish between the normal and the silver one.
Get a box (or few) of each denomination and see which one you like the most. Good luck!

to CCF. I guess you first need to figure out if your after only silver or errors/varieties. With errors/varieties go with cents, more bang for the buck. Don't dump at the same bank you buy from and order your boxes ahead of time. John1

Welcome to CCF! You should try nickels first because they are somewhat cheap, you can find silver better than quarters, and pre 1960 nickels are worth a small premium on ebay.

I do believe you are in my situation. I 99% of my halves come from BoA, 99% of them go into TD bank's coin counters. Note: TD bank does not order half dollars. You are in my region, so halves are about 1 silver coin to a box. Sometimes you might get lucky and have a few in one box. The best results have been dimes, my ratio is about 1.5 per box. Tip when dumping at TD Banks, Look for the branches that has Penny on the outside, where if they need to change the bag, it must be done from the front. 2nd, look at the reject bin, Look inside of it and do you see a white PVC half pipe? If so take note of the branches that do, some has the pipe and the angle is almost 90 degrees, so the reject coins dont make it out into the actual reject bin. Every time you dump coins, reach in to the pipe and scoop out all the change that sits on the pipe. That is where the Best silver score comes from. When dumping half dollars at TD bank, separate your dumps into two dumps, 250/250, and head over to the TD Banks with the white PVC pipes. The reason for the 250 per dump is because TD banks coin counter fill up at 100$ per bag, the last thing you want is drawing so much attention. Having the teller of CS, change out the bag 5 times. besides hitting more than 1 TD bank gives you a higher chance at finding silver in the reject tube. Another thing, try to go 1 to 2 hour before closing, this way the counter has time to "Collect" reject coins for you to scoop up.

Anything but dimes unless you are just edge searching.. Dates are small and give me a headache and I've got great vision.

to the Community! You should definitely read through many of the specific denomination threads. Not only will you see what people are finding, but you will get some other advice along the way. Of course, never be afraid to ask specific questions you have as the arise.

If you haven't yet put together a set of State Quarters, consider doing rolls/box of quarters. Then you'll get many keepers for a while. I average about one silver per box of halves, with 3-8 Not Intended For Circulations (NIFC) coins. I have yet to get more than one or two silver nickels after searching several boxes, but you can put together a full set of Jefferson nickels from CRH (unlike some denominations). I like boxes/rolls of cents between boxes of halves. because I do get keepers--a wheatie every three rolls or so. And there are more varieties in the cents (it seems) to keep an eye open for. And it's cheap. I have had zero luck with silvers in dime rolls and quarter rolls (well, a couple of silver quarters when I first started quarters). And I still don't know of a good reason to get a box of small dollars, although I am trying to get the NIFC Pres coins for a set. So, start with any denomination and then get a different one next time and see whatcha like.

You'll get many varying replies here. Every area is different with regards to finds. I've hit all the different coins in the last 35 years, and for me halves were hot from 2008-2011, then cooled off tremendously.
Since then it's been dimes, I've searched well over $100k last couple years. Quarters, believe it or not, aren't bad if you do volume. My luck was one per $300-$500, which by silver weight is about the same as my dime average of one silver per $150.
My problem with quarters is, they are quite boring with regards to variety.

I'd like to hear what advice y'all have or answers: 1 Is there any silver left? Yes 2 Are dimes or quarters more fruitful? Dimes are about 1 a box for me, I havnt done quarters 3 Should I stick to pennies and look for that 1955 DD if you enjoy that, do it. Might never find one though, I like more consistent finds, like wheats. 4 Go for nickel rolls since nobody wants them and I'll find tons of War NickelsI do cents, nickels, dimes, halves. At $1000, you could do a box of each a week, and see which you like. I enjoy the variety, I like them all for different reasons. I should prob try quarters. 5 What kind of gadget is best for viewing coins close up? Get a loupe, they are inexpensive. I have a 10x loupe that works well, you can even put it up to a smartphone and take a pic through it with great results, with some practice. go for it and see what you can find!

You will do best on nickels, pennies, and dimes, probably in that order. Quarters are the worst. Neither I or my son have ever done halves.

Ready to start! Went to local BofA branch and asked for halves. None in trays but they had some in the vault. I got 10 rolls plus 2 rolls of dimes and about 12 rolls of cents. I also have a coffee can full of loose change to go through. Besides the obvious pre-65 silver, War Nickels, and wheat cents what else should I look for?

Happy to have you on the forum. Spend a little time studying the basic reference works on these series, which is easily done. If you are to be successful, you must learn by yourself, decide what interests you, and not take the advice of people you don't even know.
