these look to depict chess pieces but any idea what they could be? Approx 15.5mm dia and 1.2g I thought maybe buttons but I dont think they would work as buttons...

I don't know but they resemble button covers used for playing dress-up.

How easy is it to move the little points on the backs? If they're pliable then it is likely they were meant to be added and removed.

Button-like as these items are, I suspect that they were decorative, as opposed to being utilitarian. This design would not have withstood the stress of a well-anchored button, methinks.
