Not sure how I feel about this piece. I like that they are only going to release 500 but not sure about adding to an already existing coin. Thoughts?

In my opinion the reverse of the coin is too busy.

Technically it is post-mint damage.

It is however kind of a neat idea for a souvenir of the pope's visit to the USA.

Technically, I don't think it's a counterstamp.
A counterstamp is incused.
On this one, the coin was pushed into a die, creating a raised impression. The part pushing the coin in is on the obverse, evidenced by the circular dent.

Blech.

It's tacky.

It doesn't represent anything the Pope said in either of his speeches.

Thye Vatican or the U.S. Mint would be better off issuing a commemmorative silver medal, perhaps based on the same flan size as a U.S. half dollar.
Perhaps they should have done a joint issue, that combine traditional U.S. and Vatican motifs.

Why? and Why a half? there is 50 rolls ruined from the start. If I find one in a box in the near I will be highly upset as I don't have a 2015 yet. Who is the they that is doing this? Some Wacko guy, found it on Google search at some modern coin sale site has a pic of the COA. "Max Mintage" of 500.

Being sold for $34.50 each!? That is more than you can still order a P&D roll set of 2015 from the US Mint!

and HSN is selling ugly colorized versions that cover up the obverse and only showing the back of the half. 2015 unaltered halves are going to be rarer than 1973 Ikes at this rate!

No, they were members of various protestant denominations or otherwise non-denominational.
