I came across this George III 1818 Half Crown on ebay. It looks good to me, but the seller's other coins all looked the same dull silver color, so I suspected he was selling fakes. The opening bid was only $15.00, but no on bid on it which only added to my suspicions about its authenticity. What do people think? Real or not. If it's not real, what are the signs that it is not? Your thoughts and opinions are most welcome. Paul Bulgerin

What alignment has this coin got (There are Chinese fakes around with the reverse turned 180 degree's) Other signs to look for are apparently on the reverse the lions tail being cut off (not sure which but you see the bottom lion in the upper right quadrant's tail is interrupted on yours) Also on obverse: an extra bead over E in DEI (don't think so) on Reverse: dot in cross of crown + two notches over PE of PENSE (not sure but your P and E look a bit messed up) and someone else mentioned "The bottom serif of the I in DEI looks buggered to, far to fat. In fact, the only I that looks right is the I in GRATIA"
This information is stuff I uncovered in a google search, I wouldn't have known these things myself... the coin doesn't look too bad to me, but it should be way more money which would make me suspicious (Mind you I missed out on a £100 banknote I was watching today, it went for £12! So bargains can be had sometimes even if it is the real McCoy)
Hope someone else comments, I am suspicious but not convinced either way on this coin.
PS it should weigh 14.1g so check that out too.

Thanks for the reply. I didn't bid on the coin so I don't know the alignment or weight.

Not authentic in my view. Fake at the top (Chinese copy) genuine article below, from another forum. You'll see the bust on the one you posted is closer to the 'bull headed' copy than the real deal. Or, if you like it, get one here for $1.61: https://aliexpress.com/store/produc...9412762.htmlOops .. I don't think Bobby allows links to that site! But it was a well known Chinese sale site for a 'copy 1818 halfcrown'. .

Thanks for the link wiamcim. I hope the author will pursue his project and eventually add some explanations regarding visual makers.
The shilling page is particularly interesting.

Forgery. This type of forgery exists for all years 1817-1820 but I've seen only low grade examples modeled on the same 1818 coin. The 1818 exist as a high grade silver forgery however these carries the same marks as the low grade ones including the wrong alignment.
