Hello CCF! I'm trying to get info on the mintage of the NE shilling? There is one in the Byron Reed coin collection (im writing about it) and I need to know the mintage. The RedBook and the Internet have failed me (so far) and I was wondering if anyone knows how many were made/survived? Thanks!

All we know is how many are known to exist today. These were made before formal record-keeping was a thing in the US. Maybe there are some estimates of the mintage based of the survival rate?

Looking at the Big Red Book it mentions John Hull of Boston received compensation of one shilling, three pence for every twenty shillings of "NE money" coined, and that his compensation had to be adjusted several times. Struck in three pence, six pence, and shilling denominations the footnote says the NE three pence is unique and eight of the NE six pence are known. Shillings seem to be priced near what six pence fetch. Original mintage from melted down Spanish coin obtained in the West Indies would (as a guess) be some multiple in tens or hundreds of the minimum of sixty pieces (three pounds) with perhaps a dozen extant? Look up the terms of John Hull's contract and you might get an idea of its value that can be turned into an estimated maximum mintage. Search for John Hull and the Massachusetts Bay Mint at Boston for which several histories are in print.

Go to Stacks/Bowers past auction sales and start digging ... there was a major collection recently with good pedigrees. See their November or Americana (January Sales) in particular.

Unknown but examples are once in a great unearthed by a lucky metal detectorist. Many copies out there as well.

Yes - Kendall is probably the best one to review pedigree/population counts ...
As many of you know not into U.S. Colonials anymore other than JUST U.S. Colonial era type contemporary counterfeits.
