Hi all!
My husband and I are fairly new to coin collecting. We collected casually for a while but more recently have become more interested in it since we keep coming across more unique coins.

Like this for instance...

I have a 1897 Morgan silver dollar that appears to have been colored by someone. But whoever did this did it SO WELL that I'm beginning to wonder if this could be worth something? There is no mint on it, or if there was it is probably covered. It Would have been in excellent condition, as far as I can tell, if it hadn't have been colored. :/

What are your thoughts on this?

How much could this have affected it's value?
Is it just a pretty coin to look at now or is there something I can use to get the metallic paint off without ruining the coin even further?

Please no harsh comments, as I've said, I'm still fairly new :)

Thank you in advance!

yes, your coin has been colorized outside of the mint and is considered damaged by numismatists. However, you are correct about it being VERY well done for what it is. So much so that I really wouldn't mind owning it myself but purely as an oddity and because it is so well done with pleasing eye appeal. Now, would I pay more than say $25-$30 for it; no. But I bet it could sell in the $50 range to a casual collector

Thank you for the fast response! :)
I probably won't be selling it because as you have agreed, it's very pretty!
I was worried that if a time came that I did decide to sell it if it would have decreased the value of the coin. That is nice to know that it could still go for at least $25!
It was a pretty interesting find. I'm considering seeing if I can find a clear table top standing show case for it. Or making one if I can't find one. It would be nice to show off as a decoration ;)

If you really want a nice display for it here is a company with nice coin displays. Check out their website below. Looks like the glass top single capsule display box might work for you

Definitely not a natural look. Very artistic looking though, someone spent some time doing that.

Looks fairly high grade. Seems like someone did this with a magic marker and may not have actually damaged the coin. You might be able to restore natural color by soaking it in Acetone.

Nearly all (100%) of collectors would prefer a natural coin.

Here is the natural toning version of your coin. It is for sale currently in the Heritage Auction. This one will cost a little more.
