Hi, I'm totally new to this, obviously. My grandmother passed away a few years ago and I've just gotten around to looking through her stuff. Found a bunch of foreign currency, paper and coins, and was wondering if anyone knew if any of it is worth more than face value. Some of the paper money is unfortunately moth-eaten on the sides, but just included it anyway.

To me, it looks mostly like French, Italian, Indian, Chinese (including Hong Kong, before it went back to China) currency from the latter part of the last century... don't know if anyone can see anything else interesting about it? Thanks, I REALLY appreciate your time.

PS: Someone just told me 3 aren't foreign, they're winged liberty silver coins? How do I go about selling these?

EDIT: Almost forgot, 2 commemorative coins from China, the back of one says "In commemoration of the 60th anniversary of the founding of the Republic of China".

from what I can see there are four silver dimes from the U.S
you can take them to a coin shop they may buy it all or maybe just the silver. or you can keep them until you get a enough post and list them here.

The coin shops near me will give you an idea of the value when you bring things to them. They charge a nominal appraisal fee only if you want it in writing and are not selling the items. If you give us an idea of your location, I'd expect someone here could suggest a store or two.
Once you know what you have, you can decide what you want to do with them.

My suggestion would be to keep posting on this site until you have enough posts to sell things, and then let us know what you are asking. I don't know their value, but I think the square one and the six-sided one look interesting!

Whatever you decide to do, please do not clean them. A cleaned coin is usually worth far less then an as-is coin.

Thank you for all your advice! I wish I could post in the selling section, but I'm not planning on becoming a serious coin-collector, and it's pretty daunting thinking of how I will get up to 50 or 100 posts when I have little to talk about except this! :T

There may be more junk silver in there in the pile. The 1944 half rupee is silver too. I'm not sure on the others but maybe. Still not worth that much money. I would keep them as a keepsake of your grandmother. Silver wise I don't see it going much over $20 for all you have possibly less then $5. What's the dates on the dimes?

You do have a few coins that have some silver content... as previously mentioned... I would recommend doing some research on a site called Numista... at least there you'd have a bit more information.... the prices are a bit off but you'll at least get some ball park.

Like the others I would encourage you to become a contributing member on here... I certainly like the ones from India and if you stick around I would make an offer on those and perhaps a few others..

Bertens: Hmm, looks like 1927, 1941, 1945 and can't read the last, 192-something

Thanks, I will check out Numista. Anyone know any info on the ones that have a lion holding a scimitar in front of the sun, where that's from? It has Arabic on it; I already figured out the other Arabic ones with the fez are from Egypt.

Oh, and Spott, I'm in NJ...

Okay, so in the first picture youve got some Taiwanese and Hong Kong coins & notes. As far as I can see, these are worth their face value in respective countries. It might be that the notes have been demonetized, if you're planning on selling them - I'd recommend any exchange office. from what I can see clearly, you've got 150 Taiwanese Yuan and 20 Hong Kong dollars, should be worth about $6 total.

In the second picture you've got some worn and torn banknotes from Nothern Africa, more specifically from Libya (under Brittish takeover from Italian occupation, thus the currency is called "Lire" yet it's written in English (and Arabic)) and Morocco. Sadly not any value in particular here because of their condition. The currency they were usable for are now long gone.

Picture three is where we've got most of the good stuff. You got silver coins from Egypt (3 x 2 piastres), Iran (1 and 2 rials, not entirely sure if they are silver though), Brittish India (3 Quarter Rupees, 1 Half Rupee and 1 Rupee) and USA (4 Mercury dimes)

Then there's the non-silver stuff- which you can't expect much money for from the looks of them. Old does not always mean valuable.
1 Anna, Brittish India
10 Centimes, France
1, 2 and 5 Fen, China (the lightweight, shiny coins).
5 and 10 Millemes from Egypt.

It's a nice batch of coins you've got and I hope you do catch some interest in these and coin collecting in general. Coins have interesting stories to tell

X2an, thank you so much for that very thorough accounting of my little collection! I think it sounds like a fun hobby, it's just that I don't have the time and it looks like the kind of hobby you need to put in a lot of research for.

Cece... The reason I like this hobby is that it takes only as much time as you want to put into it...One can put their coins away for 15 years and do nothing with them... and they're still a coin collector.

My point being if you like your little collection you have there.. you should keep it and any research you feel you need to do.. can be done if/when you're ready willing and able.....

In this hobby there isn't a race.. hardly ever does anyone make it a competition... we're just all currators hanging on to a bits and pieces of history

The six sided coin is .500 silver from Egypt and the Arabic coin under the worn Mercury dime is also silver, most likely .917. The Iran Lion coin below the Egyptian coin with a hole is most likely .835 silver and the other Iran lion coin is unlikely to be silver, but not sure. Very nice collection overall, and the advice from AgCoinAU is rock solid. The research part is incredibly fun and interesting, even with limited time.

KEEP THE COINS IN THE FOURTH PHOTO. I'm very sure that those two are Chinese silver dollar coins, like the 1934 Chinese Junk Silver Dollar. Judging from the photo you provided, it seems to be in BU condition (Brilliant Uncirculated). Depending on the age and variety, the coin can be worth well over $100. More research will be needed before we can come to a conclusion

I agree with the above. If you want to sell these, now is not the time to do it. Most of your coins are between .500-.917 silver. Silver is about $15/oz right now... it was almost $50/oz in 2011.

I would also avoid going to coin shops for the foreign silver. Most shop owners know US issues in depth, with maybe cursory knowledge at best of Canadian, British, European, and other world coins. 99% will not offer fair prices for world coins.

Fin235: Nortel stock used to be valued at over $100... now even if you had a stock issue... it wouldn't be worth the piece of paper it's printed on...

Silver is a commodity.. as such it's valuations will fluctuate. Silver hit a spike a few years ago... it was an annomoly. $50 silver is something that has only been seen in 20 year cycles... If a person is NOT interested in owning the coins... they're much better served taking the money now.. and doing with it what they want.. rather than waiting for the next outlier in economics which would create a spike in silver.

$50 silver was a fluke in the 1980s, directly linked to speculators trying to corner the market. It fell to about $4-6 after that until the mid 2000s. Since then, it has bounced between $15 and $35, hitting a high of about $49 in early 2011. Silver has held a low point due in part to the Russian Federation's suffering economy and consequent slowing industrial intake. Holding out for $50/oz may be unwise, but $30 may not take as long as one may think. At any rate, I do not think the inflation caused by the recession will allow silver to fall below $10/oz ever again.
