I am new to collecting, and came across a 1963 United States Note with a * before the serial number. I know a * before the serial number makes silver certificates more valuable. Does the same hold true for this bill? It also has a red seal. Is this worth anything?

Also does anyone know the increaced value of a 1957 silver certificate with a * in the serial #

The * is a star thus making your note a star note. Stars are created when there is some kind of error on a bill (i.e. the printing was messed up). There is a law in the US that states that no two bills (in each series I believe) can have the same serial number. The error bill is then destroyed. They then create a new bill and what would have been the same serial number were it not for the star.

There are fewer star notes created than regular notes and that's generally where the value comes from.

I don't have a bill book but I bet someone will notice this later and can give you a better estimate on the value. In the mean time can you get us a picture/scan of the bill? It helps determine the condition and when someone with a bill book sees this they can give you a more accurate price.

Hello Anita and welcome to the forum. I have a few books at home that will be able to give you an estimate. Having said that, as Arthrene suggested, pictures or a scan would be helpful. Most of my books give values based on "fine" condition notes. Considering this is not a very old note, I would guess it is in better condition than that. Lower serial numbers sometimes offer a premium as well, and I think that the issuing location makes a difference.

Having said that, if pictures or scans are not possible, give me some more information about the bills in question.

A star note always makes a note worth more than face value!

Thanks everyone for responding, and for the warm welcome. I'll scan them tomorrow night so you can see them . The serial # on the 1957 $1 silver certificate is *97590487C and the $5 note is *02389369A I don't know where to find the mint, but there is an H8 on the side of the $5 note, and an H621 on the $1 silver certificate.

I also have a $1 dollar silver certificate that has a kind of fun serial # it is a 1957A the # is C078777675A kind of a descending number pattern that I like, so I saved it.

One more question. I have a $5 US note 1951 # A92168374A that has some marks on it that look like they were a part of when it was printed. I'll scan this also. Is there any way to tell if this is from when it was printed, or a mark made after? I know some flaws are good for collecting.
Thanks so much everyone. I'm really enjoying this!
