Well guys I purchased this 1868 nickel a little over a week ago , I posted the listing photos the night I purchased it and was pretty excited about the coin until most everyone thought it was EF 40 rather than AU 53 .. So I received the coin a few days ago and some of the weak or worn spots on the shield that I hoped was just something on the slab turn out not to be and the coin isn't as detailed in that area as I was hoping .. I've tried to take a few better photos to see what you guys can make of these , I've compared this coin with several others in the AU range and have seen several more with weak ,less detailed shields that are grading the same as my coin ...So I'm not sure if these ngc coins I'm comparing to aswell as this icg coin are over graded or just weak struck examples .. This coin does have one thing that my ANA grading book says you would see on an almost unc coin that you wouldn't on a EF , that is traces of luster .. So here's a few more photos ...

The problem with these coins is determining whether they are weak strikes or worn. This is early in the Mint's use of nickel and it was giving them fits.
I see it as XF-40 but ...

This is always a tough call when you add a little circulation wear to a coin with strike issues but I really think the weakness on the shield and stars is mostly a strike issue. I still think EF40/45 is appropriate based on photos but it may be technically a low AU coin.

I appericate it guys , I guess maybe I should think about selling this one and trying to find a nicer example .. This makes the 4th blue label ICG coin that has dissipointed me , sad part is those four have all been in a row ... I use to love icg but something has changed with them as their inconsistency is just getting worse !!

Agree it's a 40, and also that you can find a better-looking example.

I have closely examined about 15 ICG coins total in the last 3 years and found all of them overgraded, sometimes by two or three grades. My local coin dealer is of the same opinion and says the initials stand for "I Can't Grade"

When I was looking for a shield for my type set the most important device for me was the strike of the shield. To me this one is a little too weak in the shield and the highest leaves don't have enough detail if you are looking for an AU coin. Overall the coin has the appearance of being cleaned even if it hasnt and for just that alone I'd look for something else

Maybe it's just my photos , I'm not seeing the cleaned looked at all .. In hand my thoughts was it had a dirty look.. No hairlines and under a loop I can see good traces of luster .. I just did a quick search and looks like this date in EF 40 is selling in the 45-55 range at auction .. So that's about what I've got into this one ... I really wasn't worried at all with the surfaces being original I'm sure they are !! .. I was more or less upset I had purchased what was suppost to be a AU Shield nickel that everyone thinks is EF. I can see where they would get that from though .. Even though it'd be a waste of 12 bucks I may just throw it in on this anacs submission if I don't sell it by then and see what they say !!
