Folks:
Is anyone going to buy the US Mint Bald Eagle coins?, the US Mint Catalog web site is down for 3+ days, crashed at 11:55 5 minutes before the sale & the US Mint does not answer via their phone 1-800-872-6468. So I am going to save the $369+ on the 3 coin set, & buy something for my wife.

You can never under-estimate the stupidity of our Mint employees. I just don't why they do this today!

I want to buy them too. I've been checking for the past few days to see if I could add one to a subscription or even view the item. No luck (except for the initial press release. Seems like the Mint could have been better about anticipating their own deadline. I'm not going to sit on the phone for hours. I guess I'll wait until the site is back up and hope this "transition" isn't because some hacker just stole all my billing information. On the plus side, my 2008 ASE showed up today in the mail. Nice surprise!

The note I got back from the site is that the Mint is changing their web host. Again, the timing was horrible. I think they will still be available in three days. They are minting 100K of the $5, 500K of the dollar, and 750K of the half dollar.

This afternoon I also tried to order the Bald Eagle coins from the mints web site and also received the message that they where changing their web host. I was able to place my order after calling them every 5 minutes for 3 hour.

I have search extensively but can't find the specifics of the $5 gold Bald Eagle coin. Does anyone know it's actual gold content? It's weight? And the gold content of the coin? Is it .900 or 999?
I did find this on an obscure site but can't confirm what the writer states and it also does not answer all my questions.
"The Five Dollar Proof Gold Coin "Pre-Issue" order cost $294.95 each - it has a weight of 8.359 grams nominal - this translates to .295 ounces and at the price of gold today at $909.00 per ounce this piece is worth $268.15, and it is a coin of known gold content - with the additional value of the mintage being limited."
Thanks

Here's the mint's link: http://usmint.gov/mint_programs/com...on=BaldEagleThe "unconfirmed writer on an obscure site" didn't use troy ounces or .900 fineness in his calculation. The worth of the gold in this coin with gold spot at $909.00 per troy ounce is $219.86. This is a beautiful coin and at $294.95 (for the proof) seems to be a good buy.

i have read that many were speculating that the system going down was not a server issue at all but rather a plot to create a frenzy for buyers.
