Hmmmmm...not sure CM. The coin looks like it has some circulation marks about the date/mm. Might be...but probably need a sharper picture or two.

Looks like it took a hit and some copper raised, or a lamination peel going on the date and mint mark area. But the mint mark looks normal for that year.

Thanks, ya'll. I had high hopes for this one, but was hoping against hope.

how much fun - would it be to discover and report a new variety - more than seventy years after it was issued. I would have probably questioned that coins in hand also.

Looks on the fence to me. The second 4 looks like it may have thickened a bit, either from doubling or from wear, hard to tell with these pics.

The circulation flattening is what you are seeing on the 44.

I have to ask what are we talking about . The mint mark right? Not the date . Are you talking about the mark to the east of the S. Directly beside the top seriff and the lower east side of the bowl of the s. I made that up I couldn't think of what that part of the s is. But seriously is that what your talking about?

Yes Tweak, the mint mark. As far as I can tell, there's no lamination issue on this coin. The four took a hit. There appears to be a second upper serif. It appears even more perfect in hand. It is the perfect shape and the field between the two is level with the field of the coin. The question is, was it caused at the mint or by a hit. The odds of a 1944 Rpm being discovered in 2015, are not good. If there were only a few made, that could explain it, but also make it difficult for another to be found. Without another, I doubt an attributer would call it an Rpm. My question is, if I held it while waiting on another one to show up, wouldn't the finder of that one be doing the same thing?
