Even being out of focus it still looks like a VG coin. Nice buy!

I LOVE bad pics on coins, usually a sign the seller doesn't know what they have and/or anything when it comes to grading.

I've got some sick scores that way.

I'd guess a solid VG but those photos stink, it could have damage. If it's a fancy 5 check the reverse "D" in United on the top serif, if it is a full serif, let us know or PM me on it please.

I think it's a VG8 underneath that bad camera work.

Westcoin, you got me interested, so I spent a couple hours looking through ebay 1865's tonight and only found 2 with full serifs on the D, most were missing and a couple partials. It seems to be pretty uncommon.

They are tougher to find, only the Fancy 5 though, the plain 5 are more common. Frank Leone will probably never release his 1865 attribution book, unfortunately, just no money or enough time in it for him. Someday I may try to put something together, but I haven't the time nor enough study on the 1865 series yet. It is probably just about as involved as the 1864 date, with a large mintage and many different varieties.
