I am thinking about purchasing this penny. It appears to me that is in MS condition though has been cleaned. This is my first penny set that I am putting together and this one of the key dates that I want. I am trying to put together an AU or better set. What are your thoughts on this coins grade? How much value does the cleaning take away? Thank you all in advance for your opinions. I am trying to learn how to grade these. *** Moved by Staff to a more appropriate forum. ***

I would avoid this coin and buy one that is slabbed by PCGS, NGC, or ANACS.

Unless you really like to gamble and know what you're doing, I'd also stay away. Yes I realize it's hard to get a deal on these, but the peace of mind is worth it to me to buy one slabbed.

Thank you all for your reply. I do not want to lay down the premium for this coin. I do have an inspection/return period so am not worried about authenticity. Once I get it, I intend to go to ICG as I am in Tampa and they have an office there. The people at ICG are very friendly and allow walk-in appointments. My main focus is if the coin is cleaned and what likely grade this would get? Again, thanks for your opinions and help with this.

If you got return options and can get it certified quickly then go for it. If it's fake or not to your liking then simply return it. It may be a gamble that'll pay off

Who is selling the coin? Online or in person? How much? Any return policy? How many days?

Don't buy it unless you have generous return privileges and a reputable LCS for an opinion.

the reverse bothers me on this one. the obverse is fairly sharp with fairly clean surfaces. the reverse just doesn't match. the VDB looks off. if you want a grade i'd say high AU maybe 58 but this coin needs looked at in hand and by a professional to get an opinion on authenticity

That thing looks sketchy to me, especially the reverse.
Certain coins I won't touch raw unless I'm very familiar with the seller; this is one of those coins.

I agree with the others, buy one of these coins from a professional coin grading company.

Why do you say it's been cleaned? The pictures suck but I see a couple cartwheel spokes in the reverse and nothing jumps out at me saying "cleaned". To be sure, an in-hand inspection is needed but you usually can't (or shouldn't) jump to conclusions from a couple of crappy pictures. Also, based on the pics given, it looks like it has a good chance of being genuine. (Why people sell these without close-ups of the date/MM area is beyond me.)
The only other red flag (always present with high grade raw key dates), why isn't this mint state SVDB not already in a slab?
If you're so confident in the return policy and that you can find out authenticity/grade quickly, it might be worth a gamble. However, in general, if you're not an expert in a series, just buy a slabbed coin. Sometimes the time, trouble and hassle is just not worth trying to save a few bucks.

Looks like a nice 64/65 to me, but I'd get one slabbed.

I should add, as soon as you get this in hand, check for the die chip in the upper loop of the S. You may be returning it sooner than you think.

Badthad if you mean the mm, I can tell by enlarging that there is a spike growing out of the top left part of of the s pointing up.
