Quote: I do not remember these circulating widely either in their day. They did, but from what I hear it was mostly in Vegas. Then the new golden dollars came out and Vegas switched cause they were smaller and lighter so they could fit more money in the same amount of space as the larger Ikes and halves.

I like the reverse. I hate the edge lettering. The obverse designs are hit or miss. Sure, the Eisenhower dollar may have been too big and heavy for every day use, but the baby dollars are just fine and could easily replace the one dollar note. Yeah, you knew I had to sneak that in here.

Don't like the edge lettering (true of Native American dollars too). Whether the coin is in a folder, an album, or a 2x2 you can't see the date to verify which date you're looking at.

Exactly. This is one reason why I am collecting proof only. I can determine the date by the Native American reverse or the Presidential obverse, but I cannot tell the mint; so I only need one per year (date set). The other reason is that I am already getting proof sets (I do not buy mint sets).

I do like the edge lettering on the 5oz pucks though. It makes their silver content kind of incognito

Well, you cannot miss the edge lettering on the pucks. It is a lot easier to read.

I like the reverse, but not as much as the rev of the Sac....and the president portraits, oh please.....the gas stations beat them to those several decades ago. And don't get me started on that edge lettering.

Not likely, the golden dollars came twenty years after the Ikes were discontinued.

If anything, they would have been replaced with SBA, not the Golden Dollars. For what it is worth, my first two Eisenhower dollars came from Vegas. I know at least one casino replaced them with large dollar sized tokens. I have three of them from the early 1980's in my exonumia album. I am not sure how widespread they were.

I'm not particularly thrilled with either the Presidential or Sacagawea series. I think in both cases the idea of trying to duplicate a golden color was a disaster. Having said that, I have complete to date collections of all of these series. My reasoning is to leave a record of what was minted during my lifetime. I know it sounds contradictory, to collect coins that I don't really have a passion for. My appreciation is more about the total series collection rather than the individual coins (I know how dumb that must sound) . I completely agree with n9jig that the change of the Jefferson nickel was complete a failure. The Jefferson Coin and Chronicle set offers a much more beautiful depiction of both Jefferson and his home. Surprisingly, I actually liked the SBA dollar. Other than the fact that Ms. Anthony resembles the Wicked Witch of the East, I thought the design had merit. The First Spouse series is just another program designed to appeal to investors, not collectors. Most of us must settle for bronze copies and that's a shame. As was mentioned many times already, the Mint is completely disengaged from the world of numismatics. The only thing left for them to offer is an inside-out Kennedy half with the design in the interior of the coin (no really, trust us, it's there ). Jack

Quote: That's interesting because an Ike weighs exactly the same as 10 dimes or 4 quarters. I think I should have said "heavy and bulky" instead of just heavy. But carrying five of these in a pocket instead of paper was crazy. Presidential dollars: I do like the REV - but not the large number 1. I hate the edge lettering b/c it hides the date, MM, and IGWT. Its hard to believe they did this since they knew they would be making collector's versions. Putting them side by side in an album would not show the differences. I was told by a friend who was a local that SBA's (Carter quarters!) eventually ended up being used in Baltimore (or was it DC?) as subway tokens. Maybe something can be found as useful for the wasted 6 cents per person used to make the Presidential dollar series (back at you jbuck )
