Hello all,

I won this 1/4 Anna tonight on ebay (the seller seems pretty legit at a glance), and a little later I noticed that it has these four lines connecting the figures to the edge of the coin (at the left lion's flag point and heel, and at the right lion's tail and toes). Is that a legitimate feature or a sign of counterfeiting?

Thanks,
Bobby

Those are cracks in the die that was used to produce the coins. (Because a coin is just the impression from a die, a crack in the die means a raised ridge on the coin.) A good counterfeiter may well intentionally include cracks in his own die, so their presence gives little insight into the coin's authenticity. However, the coin looks pretty legitimate to me: as you may have inferred from the amount of your winning bid, there are a lot of these coins around and there is not much reason to counterfeit circulated examples.

Lions' faces weak strike as usual.
A tiny amount of wear, AU55.

I agree with all of nalaberong's comments.
I have seen three or four 1935 EIC 1/4 annas in unc, over the years.

Seems like a bargain at $1.76!
