For the past year I have been obsessed with coin collecting and devouring any piece of information I can get my hands on. My grandfather left me a set of circulated walking liberties and I have been hooked ever since. I've realized for a while that my heart is set on deep cameo proofs and I have decided that I want to start a set. Now I do plan on the '36-'42 sets as well even though only a few cameo coins are known. I also understand the from '50-54', dcam is quite the expenditure. However,I plan to focus on 55'-present in deep cameo. I'd like to buy sets in the original holders from '78-present because after a read of a guide book of modern United States proof sets, I've learned that coins from '77 and before aren't a guarantee to be dcam. So, for the coins that I buy certified, what is a great grade to go? I've been thinking of pf-67 but I just want a few opinions. Thanks!

I too enjoy cameo halves with my focus on Franklins and silver Kennedys. Unless you have some DEEP pockets many of these coins are price prohibited with the deep cameo designation. My set is graded cameo proof 66 or 67 in NGC or PCGS holders. Only one of my set is designated "ultra" cameo but many, in my opinion, show equal to deep cameo without the distinction. Look for the eye appeal that pleases you and happy hunting.

Won't be an easy set, but we're not in this to do easy things, right?

You choose to build this set! You choose to build this set in this decade and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard.

Another question. Say for a 1930's proof set, all the coins are at a reasonable cost at the pr-67 level except the cent. Should I go with a lower grade for just that one coin or bring the whole set down a level to keep it consistent?

I would like to considering a proof Morgan is well above my price range but I think I'm going to stick to the 1936-present years for proof sets for now.I would love a 1893 dcam proof set because it's 100 years before I was born
