Dave,

I can't help on the VAM but I will offer a grade opinion of MS-64. I hold this one back from a 65 because of the obverse. The reverse is a strong 65 but the cheek chatter and obv. fields hold it back slightly.

Very nice coin.

Just some minor baggies on the cheek and forehead. MS64-65.

"Cheek chatter"? I like that! I'm going to start using that phrase for now on.

To me, easily MS-65 and possibly higher.

MS-64. I think that the hit on her cheek would prevent it from going higher. The reverse is absolutely beautiful though.

Also, 7/8 TF? From the pics I can see at least four tail feathers peeking out. Any doubling or die chips around "in god we trust"?

Very nice coin!

Judging from the structures under the olive branch, it's either VAM-36 or VAM-37, both 7/4TF sharing the same reverse. Have a look at VAMworld's descriptions of the obverses. Hope for a VAM-36 - NGC has none above MS63.

Here's details of my example of VAM-36. Note the little die scratch under the second star, extending diagonally from the denticles to underneath the star - that's the characteristic unique to VAM-36 that will nail it.

Can you all forgive me? I tried not to be deceitful here without letting the cat out of the bag. This coin was offered on ebay through a reputable seller who mistakenly listed it as a 7TF instead of the correct 7/8TF strong. The difference in price is significant. I posted the pictures here to obtain confirmation and reassurance. You all confirmed what I believed ... at least an MS64, 7/8TF strong, and SuperDave gave me valuable info on the VAM36 Population.

Had I mentioned that this was a current listing, the competition may have increased dramatically. The auction ended late Saturday night and I won the coin for $163 including shipping. The seller notified me on the invoice that this was mistakenly listed as a 7TF and I made a great buy. He honored my bid and informed me the coin shipped today. Once it is in hand I will photograph it for VAM diagnositcs and share the results.

I thank all of you for your help and hope you do not think ill of me for doing this.

Dave,

I do not think ill of you for doing this. If something is advertised there is an expectation among honorable individuals that the advertised price is what is paid for the item in question. This is true in retail stores and ebay alike. If the seller saw this and wanted to cancel the auction they could have done so. I have bought coins on ebay that were not correctly identified by the seller and made out on some of them (I will post a story in the coming weeks). Some buyers troll for mislabeled items or poor spelling. It is not your fault that you got a good deal due to the mistake of a seller.

If we were talking about an error of tens of thousands of dollars then maybe I would hope you would do the right thing. This buy is just a great catch on your part!

Thanks,

Jim

Sounds like a nice, stand-up seller that I wouldn't mind doing business with. Care to share the seller's name?

JustJim and bio,

I was hoping no one would feel used. I spend a lot of eye straining time on ebay looking closely at listings. This is my best so far, but I've scored a couple of HOT 50 Morgan VAMs in the past month too.

bio ... the seller was "ecoron" out of California He has about 8 current listings. He is a class act in my book.

Seated, you said, "I thank all of you for your help and hope you do not think ill of me for doing this."

Without sanctimony or platitude, there's a point where it boils down to how I feel about myself and my actions. There are exceptions to the rule and different benchmarks for different people. One of my mentors always says, "Jim, if you're feeling guilty, why?"

As a seller, can I complain if I (inadvertently) sell something for far less than its value when I am able and knowledgeable enough to research but dont?

As a buyer, I'm dont fully support, "caveat emptor" in all situations...nor am I willing to hose those I suspect are unable to and/or dont have the resources to avoid being taken advantage of.

You're a coin collector who bought from a coin seller. Methinks, in the end, that you "had" the advantage of your own research and knowledge rather than "took" advantage of someone in a circumstance who wasnt equally capable to learn and know what you know.

blah blah blah.

Jim

My head kind of hurts after reading Jim's post(), but I think he's saying "well done".

As a side note, I haven't bought a coin in a long time off of ebay that I did not place here first for thoughts...I don't think I'm using anyone here. In fact, sometimes I think I'm helping folks as

1. Everyone gets some more grading practice.
2. If I buy, we can compare unmolested photos in my house compared to listing photos...
3. People will find that there are deals to be had out there still...
