This is my number 3 1931-S and is a nice coin but for the corrosion on the reverse. I am considering EVOO (extra virgin olive oil). what would you do?

A definite Xylene candidate. Olive oil won't touch that.

If you need more info, I can post more.

Olive oil might help, but prepared to be patient and wait at least a year (turning it over every month).

How about acetone ? Never tried it myself but some people swear by it.

I'm an acetone swearer, it won't help with this type of corrosion.

Of course, you could put it in some for a few days without consequences.

Vaslin, it has been in acetone and it did nothing, which is what I expected. Tell me more about Xylene, please.

Xylene will only remove organic materials, it won't touch corrosion. It's much less polar than actone, so it's a lot stronger for removing organic deposits. It never hurts to try, it's certainly not going to damage the coin.

That's a nice 31S by the way. :)

Here's the link to the thread Jim. Plus, there are pictures where the xylene removed some nasty green gunk.

Home Depot. It's on the paint isle next to the acetone. Unfortunately, they only sell Xylene in the big can.
