If you could post (some or a photo) of this 1943 Steel penny, then some of the Experts can help and determine what could have caused it.

If you search ebay for "1943 ghost" you'll probably find a lot of them. I know I've seen it a lot on there and I've only been collecting for a little over a month!

I think I recall it being a weak die, but I'm not certain. I'm sure the experts can answer this better than I can.

slooo, these are most typically "strike throughs" or a die that had grease in one or more of the devise areas. On a die, the devise is a negative or a cavity and when the die was cleaned they did not get all of the grease out. With the cavity filled, there was not place for metal to flow and subsequently, no devise.

They are pretty common. They fetch a few bucks on ebay but really have little value.

For some reason the 4 on the 1943 cent seems to have clogged easily and frequently. I have seen a lot of these things with the 4 missing.
