So I was at 2 different banks today, and #1 was successful, as I got 2 uncolored 5s at last! (even though they're in really rough shape) I also picked up a 2006 star note in the mix of 1s received. But at #2, the teller showed me a small portrait 20 that the was deposited by a business customer, and at first I thought, "wow, that's amazing condition for a 1985!" But of course, any possible value was destroyed by one little thing: THE COUNTERFEIT PEN
Seriously, why do cashiers even use that? It's already known to be ineffective since counterfeiters could bleach a bill and the phony new one could pass the pen test, but people automatically think odd looking bills are fake. These classic design bills were once normal, but now they're obsolete and many who grew up with the old money consider the new stuff monopoly money.

But on with that. My question for you is, have you ever found money that would be uncirculated or AU but isn't due to 1 imperfection? And also, what do you guys think of the counterfeit detector pens?

The pens are useless but if it makes the bank teller or cash room mgr at Walmart feel more confident in their job then that is just the way it is.

Ouch.

Need to let your tellers know to hold those aside, that you will buy them and take all responsibility.

Oh believe me, they hold onto anything they get, but the only old bills besides the tagged 20 were 2 50s from 1993, neither of which was in the best shape.

I've often thought that being a Bank Teller was an overlooked career.

The counterfeit pens seem a bit outdated -

I've seen from a few places that the pens can mostly pick up if the paper on a bill is sketchy material but more advanced counterfeiters can fake that. The more advanced money detectors that check for multiple security features seem like the way to go for places like banks that get a lot of bills regularly - http://www.itestcash.com/blogs/ites...ey-detection
