Quote:IMO, I think these dollars should NOT have been a golden color, but rather the same as the SBA dollars. I really can't see how those could ever be confused for a quarter!! That is likely b/c you are a coin collector and coins are important to you. I cannot believe how many people don't have an idea who is pictured on our coins and bills. But it is a typical thing. I was there when this was happening. As coin collectors we pay a lot more attention to what we have in hand. The non-coin collecting masses don't even think of keeping a running inventory of what coins (or een how much) is/was in their pocket. Also a quarter bought a lot more and was the main piece of change spent. Since a quarter is easy to tell from smaller change by hand, when a quarter was needed, normally it did not even take a visual glance. You just put your hand in your pocket and felt for the quarter. It was automatic. People were not used to having another almost-quarter-sized coin in their pocket and either forgot they had it, or as pointed out before, did not keep a running total of what was in their pocket. Different times, different circumstances. Coins were handled/spent a lot more often.

Our perceptions are biased. I got many SBA dollars from my mother because someone thought they were giving her quarters in change.

Mint set prices are a bit high in my opinion, but if I pocket the 8 prez dollars in each set then it's like getting some of my money back making the sets cheaper!

The human eye sees color first. This is also why something of the same color and relative size can be confused even with different designs. If you don't think about it, and what "regular" guy does when making change, you'll easily mistake the two

That was why the steel cent was hated so much, It kept being confused for a dime.

Had not thought about that... but it sure makes sense (cents?)

I find that the fact that SBAs were so disliked makes them more appealing to me. Still not that good though. I must say, I have a couple.

Personally I think the effigy could have been more complementary. I never pursued them, but have some and some that are included in proof sets. Personally I like the min-Ike-REV design.
I also believe what drove the design at the time was a nod to the Women's Lib movement. At least I know they were happy about it. I remember some mumbling about this topic in a negative way at the time, but as said before, people seemed to like the novelty of them when they first saw them.

Having that rendition of the portrait the effigy most resembles always made me think of her as an old, gray haired lady being represented. But the portrait, as you see with the Google search, shows she was not a Grandma in that image. The coin, unlike the typical side portrait of her, also makes her look as if she is scowling or angry.
Don't get me wrong - I am not saying I could have done a better job!

If they gave these things a reeded edge, and found some way for the gold color to stay, they would have been a big hit

I dislike all modern day $1 coins. they just don't circulate. now; if the mint produced ONLY proof one dollar coins ( different designs ) for collectors only ,then come out with a totally different $1 bill even the paper would be of higher quality to last at least 40 years in circulation. the only problem I see is what to do with all the $1 bills we have now ? send them all to china to pay off our debt please feel free to comment.

Quote: the only problem I see is what to do with all the $1 bills we have now ? Nothing. They only last six months to a year, so you just wait it out. This is the whole problem with the bills versus the coins, the coins last 30 to 60 times longer.
