Greetings,

Short story...

My father in law gave my young son a coin that he found (not sure where) when he was in the US Navy (some time in the middle 60's).

My son never really showed me the coin and I found it while cleaning his bottom dresser drawer.

Can anyone help me to determine...is it real (if so, where is it from and when?), or is it fake (if so...what is it even a fake of)? Pictures below (I hope I did it correctly).

Thank you to anyone that reads this and can offer any help at all. This is my first time posting on any coin forum, so please forgive me if this is not appropriate or in the wrong spot!

Hello Lovecoins,

I am not sure what "looks cleaned" exactly means, but we did not try to clean the coin in any way (if that is what you meant). If it means something else in coin forum lingo (like it is a fake), I am not sure.

In any case....thanks for looking and responding!! Have a great rest of your day!

Looks like a Greek coin portraying the part of the Hercules myth where he kills the snake as a toddler. I found several online, but none matched yours. I am leaning toward fantasy coin at this time, but could be wrong. The letters around the portrait seem way too small, and obverse legends were not popular with the Greeks.

Might be a good idea for the mods to move this thread over to the Ancients section for proper attention.

Thank you Finn235!

I hope the mods see this and move it to the right spot. Maybe someone will see it there and know what it is.

Thank you again!

I agree, a modern fantasy. It seems to reference an issue from Epidaurus, 250 - 245 BC. These drachms had a laureate head of Apollo on the obverse (obviously changed on muzak23's coin) and, on the reverse, a depiction of Asklepios, Apollo's son (and a god of medicine), holding a scepter with his left hand while extending his right hand over the head of a serpent, and with an "E" in the right field:

Thank you Bob L! This is really interesting! Would there be any value at all for my son's coin? I would hate for him to lose it if it is worth any real money. Any help with that would be greatly appreciated as well. Thank you!!

I tend to doubt it's worth very much since it's likely a modern creation. Sorry.
