Dear friends, I am new to the world of collecting coins. I am an experienced collector of historical documents and signatures but not coins.

I was researching the history of the Tribute Penny and now I feel I must own one.

I was offered this coin but I need your guidance to know if it is real or not. It is from a reputable seller.

Based on its current condition, what would be a fair value for it?

Thank you very much in advance.

It appears to be a silver plated counterfeit. Beware!

The coin appears to be a fouree. These were ancient fakes. If this is in fact an ancient fake it does have value. If's it's a modern copy no real value. I've check several fake coin sites and didn't find a match to your coin, so I think this is a fouree struck during the time of Tiberius.

The holes in the plating reveal the scam.

I agree with Ron that this is a an ancient fouree, a period counterfeit intended to defraud the government. As such it is not the same as a "fake" which is made much later to fool collectors.

As Ron said, because it is ancient it has some value, and for a prominent type such as this it has more value than most fouree pieces. That said, it is still only worth a small fraction of what an authentic Tiberian denarius would bring. This example shows all the lettering of the original (made from clay molds) and lots of portrait detail, so this is a nice one.

Still interesting, even if fake.
