It appears that your coin has been selectively electroplated with gold but it was not done by the US Mint. Many marketing companies have plated State Quarters with silver, gold, and platinum but this is the first one I have seen that is selectively plated. However, the amount of gold plating is trivial and does not add any real value to the quarter although it might fetch a couple bucks on ebay as a novelty.

Hey bio, in brief, how do they ensure the plating is only in selected areas? Just curious

Just look up 'selective gold plating' or 'selective electroplating'. There are a lot of links for companies that do that sort of work. The Wikipedia article might give the most info. on how it is done.

I found one also but can not find anything about it ..
It has a plastic coating on it that makes it hard to photograph, the plastic coating makes the auto focus on my camera want to Snow globe, for lack of better terms..
It is very heavy and I'm thinking silver because it doesn't have any nickel lines , with selective gold plating and a coating of plastic feel on both sides ..
Mine is a 2003 Illinois, land of Lincoln, 21st century State Quarter..

That is simply gold plating. If someone will give you a dollar for it, take the money.
