These arrived in the mail this morning. My first interesting French coins.

First up a Louis XVI 2 sols. Checking the date against others I think it's 1792 (These were minted 1791-1793).

Louis XVI was imprisoned in 1792 and guillotined in January 1793 during the French Revolution

It has a heart mint mark denoting that it was minted in Strasbourg.

Second a Louis XVI 1 Sol, 1791 with mint mark for Rouen.

Both very worn of course but lovely pieces of history for £1 each.

Not bad for a pound, especially if they are silver.

Not silver I'm afraid. Bronze I think.

Nice start at a good price! I like French branch mints and the revolutionary coinage. If this was 1790's US copper it would be in the $100's.

I recently got a big bunch (about 20) of 1790s French 1 and 2 sol coppers from a bargain bin, at 40 rubles (aka pence) for each coin.
There was a Subalpine Republic coin in there, which was really nice (hadn't heard of these before), but the others were mostly in lower grade than yours (and some apparently had verdigris).
