What causes this coin to have this coloration? The dark grayish color is uniform and covers the entire coin.Being a newbie I though maybe a proof, but had read some time ago any color deviation would be on the fields of th coin. Thanks for any info!

Proofs from the 90s came from San Francisco so it would have an S mint mark under the year. Many different thing cause copper coins to color different ways. Oil on our hands, chemicals they may have been exposed to, if they were lost in the ground, and then found by metal detector. I have seen dozens of color compositions of coins so it is hard to say.

Kim, being a newbie myself, I asked the question - "How do I know I have a proof?".

Check out the link above for lots of good info on determining if you have a proof!

Many newer collectors think "Proof" is a grade of coin. It is not a grade but a completely different die is used to mint them. There are business strikes, issued for general circulation, and proof strikes sold by the mint to collectors. It is possible to find proof coins in circulation (I have found them myself). A proof coin that has been in circulation is considered damaged and known as an Impaired Proof.
