I will readily confess that I do not know enough about mint errors to speculate about this, and I present it for your analysis. Although my camera is not very good, what you see is fairly true to the coin in hand. The last date number is barely present. LIBERTY fades gradually toward the rim. IGWT is basically a bump on either end, with almost invisible bumps in between. The reverse has similar obscurities, somewhat at random. My (very) untutored guess would be grease, but note that there is a fairly straight line going from around the "of AM" area down toward the middle top of the Memorial. That seems anomalous. Anyway, I hope this is a proper use of the forum and that this will be of some mild interest.

Thanks, cwb. I think it's the most interesting error coin I have found personally, so I'm glad to have a name for it.

Thanks, SSK. I was just flipping through some coins, giving them a very quick look before they went to the counter, and there it was.

Here's a little follow-up. I had seen that site cwb posted before, but had not spent much time there. It's quite good and has a good section on errors. I found the explanation for another coin that has been vexing me. Again, I'm no expert, but I had never seen one of these before; apparently it's the result of striking the coin with a piece of wire on it.(Edit: same as Jbuck's avatar?) (Sorry my photos are sideways; they are right up at the source; I'll try to fix it.)

Looks correct. Struck through wire. I need an image of the trench that is on the coin. Coin damage is mostly flat at the bottom of the trench. On struck through round things like wire it is rounded and not square. I always take my images with what I'm showing as horizontal. It saves a lot of time of trying to edit them straight.

I *think* the trench is round; it's a little hard to tell. But it is very regular from one end to the other.

Looks like an awesome high grade struck through! Quote: Jbuck's avatar? jbucks avatar is an ike that someone punched a J into. And since ikes are also known as bucks, it is a j buck. The member GR58 then gave it to jbuck. Here is the thread describing it. https://goccf.com/t/157818

If you could get a close up of it, I could show it better on the next images. I added your edited picture to my educational files.

That's neat, coop. Thanks for the message.
Edit: I'll work on some better photos tomorrow, but I remain limited by hardware. I'm going to try to find a relatively inexpensive solution to that problem.

Thanks for the comment, cwb. What's sort of interesting is that it came as part of a purchased full set of LMC's. The set was nice enough that it's evident that the vendor "curated" it with some care, so I'm curious whether he noted the error and just decided to share it, or if it slipped by unnoticed. It really caught my attention when I first saw it.
