Are there any countries in particular which made a lot of silver coins post-1960?

I don't want to flood this forum with photos of all sorts of coins, so I was hoping maybe somebody could give me an idea of which countries might have a lot of modern coins which are sliver or silver clad.

Most countries did away with the normal silver coinage like the US in the mid 60's when the value of the silver was worth more then the value of the coin. There are still thousands of non-bullion coins out there and in current production like the silver State Quarters but in most instances....these coins are not released into normal circulation

oh and I don't think anyone on this forum has ever said..."Please stop posting pictures"

Bring em on!

mahgobbi, I would recommend to you, if you're serious in continuing with your daughter's coin collecting, that you pick up a copy of Krause & Mishler's Standard World Coins 1901-2000. The book may seem a bit pricey at first, but when you consider all the information inside of it it becomes a better deal. You can pick up a used copy from Amazon, or if you're very lucky you can find a copy at a used bookstore, or an old copy at a Numismatic/Coin store.

This book will have some help at the front for determining the various countries, and if you're feeling scholarly, even the alternate systems for dating used by different cultures. It's very useful.

Just an option, that you might be interested in. :) Otherwise, we definitely love pictures here!

Your question is way too complex to answer simply, because, while the answer for each country may be relatively simple, the answer for each country is different to every other country.

There are some countries with a simple answer. Australia, for instance: anything that "looks silvery" and is dated prior to 1965 is silver; Australian coins dated prior to 1946 are sterling silver (.925 fine), 1946 to 1963 are .500 fine. There's also the 1966 50¢, and that's it for circulating coins.

Other countries are much more complicated. Here's the stats for France: 1920 and earlier, anything with "franc" in the denomination (as opposed to "centime") is .900 or .835 silver (except for the gold ones). Then, 1929-1939, the 10 and 20 francs are .680 silver. Finally, the 5 francs 1960-1969 and 10 francs 1960-1973 are silver. Anything else that looks "silvery" is either pure nickel or cupronickel.
Don't say "infinitely" when you mean "very"; otherwise, you'll have no word left when you want to talk about something really infinite. - C. S. Lewis

Around here, Germany (Fed. Rep.) made silver circulation coins until 1974, and Austria until 1973. As Sap wrote, being a little more specific would help.

In some cases you can tell what is silver and what is not; silver coins often have a somewhat "yellowish" tone while copper-nickel pieces do not. Problem is, you may need a sample of each in order to tell ...

Also, quite a few countries still make collector coins that are issued at face value. They could actually circulate ... but practically they hardly ever do. Such pieces just do not enter general circulation in the way that "usual" coins do.

Thank you everyone. This is the kind of information I was looking for. My daughter has about 10 pounds of world coins, so I really don't want to waste my own time and burden everyone here with posting photos of hundreds and hundreds of coins, but I also think it would be smart to separate any blatantly obvious silver coins from the rest of her collection. I'm going to take a closer look at some today and I'll take photos of any that I'm really not sure about.
