G'day, see item 160199019236 on E-bay. The coin in the pic has seen a lot of circulation, but the missing legend does not seem to be accompanied by rim-damage or obvious abrasion on the field, which I would expect to see if someone used a grinder, etc. Wha'd'y'reckon ? Peter in Darwin

Peter, It looks like die fill to me. No sign of it being struck through oil as indicated by the seller.

Looks fairly genuine error and if I found it in my change I would be quite excited. However, if it is dummied up, presumably the person who did it would have taken great pains to make it look genuine. Will be interesting to see what it fetches -probably if you have the expertise to do a fake like this you would be making wavy 2s which fetch very good prices. So, I say (for what it is worth from a complete amateur) it is probably a genuine error.

G'day, this coin generated plenty of interest: closed at Oz$120.00, after 15 bids. Peter

Unbelievable price. I have many (ok, more than a couple ) die filled coins that are the equal of that one. Apart from my die-filled 2001 federation upset, I have always assumed the value of these to be somewhere between (say) $10 and at the most $50.

It does make me wonder about the authenticity of at least one the bidders.

farnbycoins, Hmmmmm..I'd be surprised if that coin left the mint in that state. My verdict would be post mint man made, looks like it's had another coin bashed on to it quite forcefully. Not saying the seller did it as I've bought from that seller & have not had any problems with items. It maybe a bit off centre, which would be ridgy didge.

That damage in the field to the left is a bit of a give-away for me, and put me off a serious bid. Agree post strike manipulation. Highlights the possible pitfalls in this hobby.

Give me a hand full of 50c pieces, a sledge hammer, a few lumps of metal, a piece of timber and I reckon I can make you half a dozen of that error. You know, you could even possibly do it by loading two coins (one backed with timber to avoid Obverse damage) into a bench vice and just put some turns on the vice.
There you go, two alternate methods for making that, and I've hardly thought about it!
But the look of it, I reckon someone may have been trying to re-create a die clash error. The problem with that is, die's are VERY HARD and the depth of impression from a die clash, doesn't seem to be much. So just gaffa-taping three coins together and WHACKING them, or loading them into a vice, isn't going to produce an accurate result.
I must admit tho, this is tempting me to put some of my metal working skils to use and see what can be created in an average garage! If I had access to a Mill or other toys, one could make some amazing errors.
