Hi all,

I was just going through my $1 coin collection and noticed that on a 96 Sir Henry Parkes $1, there is a relatively large "A" between 1996 and the Queen's head. Although I don't have a scanner/digital camera to help me describe it well, the "A" measures approx 3.5mm or 1/8".

It looks like a pretty well done "A" but I haven't heard of any such mark on those coins. Is this mark mint-made or human-made?

Thanks.

There is an A mint mark parkes coin (MYO at the Adelaide coin show I think). I am fairly sure the MM is on the reverse though, down to the bottom right of Henry's head. Can you post a picture?

Any chance that the coin went into the press up side down?

Hi markn,

Thanks for your reply. I also have a "C" MYO mintmark of the 96 $1 and the MM is on Henry's side. I have pulled out another 96 Henry Parkes $1 (circulated) and there is no "A" on the reverse of that one. I don't have a scanner or digital camera (I really should get one), but besides the info in my previous post, the top of the "A" is just below the year.

Mintmarks are not large. There is an unknown someone that has been stamping numbers on $1 coins. Sounds like whoever did numbers have also used letters.

Thanks for the reply Learjet.

I was thinking that the "A" was abit large to be an incorrectly placed mintmark. I'll be holding onto it and hopefully I'll get a digital camera soon so I can show the coin to everyone.

That would be great. Otherwise you may have a friend with a camera or scanner?

Jonesy18, This is a fairly common occurrence with Aussie coins. I have 6 different 'stampings'as follows:

20¢ 1967 0 - left of date obv
20¢ 1968 U - left of date obv
50¢ 1975 E - left of date obv
$2 1998 3 Upside down - on neck obv
20¢ 2004 large 5 over 4 in date obv
$1 1997(smithy) 0 - between date & neck obv
$1 1997(smithy) 0 - on wing + fuselage rev (same coin as above)

There are quite a few other collectors who have reported finding coins with letters or numbers stamped into them. No one knows exactly why it's been done though. A few theories have been suggested, all agree that they're post mint happenings.

What I think is curious though, is that all the letters stamped are vowels.

Thanks for your replies Learjet and nancyc,

I was thinking that it was a post-mint mark but it's good to get everyone's opinion on it. I might just have to start a page in my collection about post-mint marks on coins ....

Hi all,

Well, I've bought myself a digital camera and have decided to try and take a picture of the Henry parkes $1 coin I was talking about. Apologies about the quality of the picture (I think it'll take me a while to get used to it), but hopefully you can see the "A" in between the Queen and the year.

What amazes me is just how good the engraving is on the "A".

I don't personally have any info, there was a fair bit of discussion about them on the 'old' Australian Coins, Tokens and Banknotes Forum, probably around a year ago now.

They are without any doubt all post mint events.

I've found a couple more of them since I last posted in this thread.

A lot of people just toss them back into circulation, I keep them as a curiosity, the general opinion seemed to be they have no significant value over face.

life is a mystery to be lived not a problem to be solved
