Can you lose the luster off coins that are just sitting in a box with other coins, is it possible there some kind of dry chemical reaction that maybe happening from all the different metals on the coins.

Yes. It depends on the metals what will happen to each but if coins are exposed to air, they can react to the compostition of the air. If they are in the ground, touching other metals, pvc, or get wet with different liquids they can react in many different ways. Unless they are cut off from all of these things it is possible for them to lose luster, change color, or tarnish if they are silver.
