I'm having trouble pinning down this coin. At first I thought this was the coin of Perseus who succeeded the rule of Alexander the Great in Macedonia. However the design on the back of the coin falls more in line with the coin of Lysimachos or even Mithradates VI.

Can anyone shed some light so I can tag it correctly and study the history in more depth?

Wish there was more of the legend visible, but my guess would be Seleukid. Possibly Seleukos II.

on the reverse is Apollo sitting left on the omphallos , I think Seleukos III or IV . With a better phote of the legend ,we can be sure.albert.

Possibly Republican: Nicaea, Bithynia, C. Papirius Carbo, Proconsul 62-59 BC.

Perseus bronzes are generally rarer overall however the design on you coin posted is most definitely Seleucid due to the outlay of the legends. Although bob l posted coin is a possibility

I believe I see a kappa-alpha-rho-beta-omega-nu sequence on TMK's reverse legend at left, as well as an alpa-pi in the middle of the next row, and a pi-iota in the row at right, all which match the coin I cited. I'm not sayin' I'm sure (about these letters or their names or that the coin I posted is a match), just that it looks like a possible reverse legend match, or close match...

Interesting, I still think it's Seleukid but Bob L's reference looks really close. Hopefully TMK65 can clean the coin a bit more so we can read the legend better.

I think Bob is right.on the obverse : head of Dionysus right wreathed with ivy ,before : NIKAIEOON , rev : Roma seated left on a pile of shields, holding Nike in right hand , spear in left , at right : EPI GAIOY at left : PAPIPIOY KARBOONOOS , in exergue : ROME . As Nicaea is situated in the kingdom of the Seleucids , the Romans took here a Seleucid coin as model and adapted it for the political propaganda.albert
