I found this while working as a cashier a few years back, and quickly identified it as something different by the differently colored sides. I'm reorganizing my collection and after further inspection of this quarter, it seems that I can't identify what exactly it is.
This is the front And this is the back
I performed a drop test, and it sounds more like a silver quarter instead of a clad quarter. I have weighed the quarter.
And it weights in at 5.8 grams as you can see. A clad quarter weighs 5.67 grams, and a 90% silver quarter weighs in at 6.25 grams. So I believe this is a 40 percent silver quarter. The only problem is that, as far as I know, they only made proof 1976 s mint proof quarters. Also, as far as I know they only made 1976 clad s mint proof and 1976 40% silver s mint proof quarter. I can't find the weight online of the 40% silver quarters. Can anyone share this information with me? This coin doesn't appear to be neither. It doesn't appear to be proof at all. I believe I have a 1976 40% s mint quarter (non-proof) which would be impossible. But I believe this is what I have.
Below is the quarter compared to the clad 1976 proof quarter in my proof set from 1976.
The quarter on the left is the quarter in question, and the quarter on the right is a known clad quarter non-silver Finally the quarter on the left is the quarter in question, and the quarter on the right is a known 90% silver quarter
Here's the quarter in comparison with a proof 90% silver quarter
Here's the quarter in comparison with a non-silver proof quarter that I found in circulation
Does anybody here know what exactly I am looking at? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
When questioning if a coin is silver or clad, don't forget the tissue test. pull a two ply tissue apart to get one layer. Then place it over a silver coin and one you question. They they look like this it is clad coin: If both appear white then both are silver. You can do this on coins in you album without taking them out by laying the single layer over the coins in the holder. (if the silver coins are dark/tarnished this may not always be a good way to tell for sure)
