Hey, guys,
My numismatic photography skills are awful, and rather than getting a good camera, I'm looking for a good and fairly powerful USB microscope that I can use. I found this one on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Plugable-Micr...3;microscope. Not a bad price. Does anyone have suggestions for a high quality unit under about $80?

Numisma. the second one my son uses that for his coins searching. it works very good it is also very easy to images the coins. where this really shines it with postage stamps. if you are sure you want to go this way. what him and I did was use my janjso lamps diffused to light the bright coins such as nickel's quarters dimes and silver dollars. the little led lights reflect off the coin when imaging. so you can darken the light and use your own lights at the same angles that ray and dave . teach us to use and that works pretty good. but if your thinking about a camera setup. if I had it to do over I would get ray to set me up. save you time and money. any way have a great one

I have two of these http://www.amazon.com/Celestron-Del...HGVBE1MFRHGF, They take good pictures and have a good interface to view coins on your computer screen.

Numisma,

I also have been looking for a Microscope to use for my coins and stamps.
I have been looking at your first post as a possible one for me, Plugable USB 2.0 Digital Microscope with Flexible Arm Observation Stand for Windows, Mac, Linux (2MP, 10x-250x Magnification).
Now I may be changing my mind with the Celestron 44302 Deluxe Handheld Digital Microscope 2MP.
Is the 10x to 40x magnification (up to 150x on some monitors) for the Celestron that much better then the 10x-250x Magnification on the other?
Also I use a Mac not a Windows base computer.

I bought the last one I posted and have been using it for some time now. It works quite well on my Windows computer.

I checked the CD that came with my Celestron 44302 and its software includes both Windows and Mac.

One of my Christmas gifts is a Plugable USB 2.0, just like the one in the original post. It takes decent pictures and has a fairly short learning curve. I have it paired to a pc using Windows 7 and I run it through a good photo editing program. My best results so far have come when I set the subject on a sheet of black construction paper and use another sheet of this same paper to shadow and reflect the light. I also use a LCD flashlight at different angles to get some spectacular results. If I can do this I think anyone can get some great photos with a little experimenting and creativity.
