In the collection I inherited, there were several "so called dollars". Among them were a few silver God and Freedom Medals and one Copper. The silver are identified as HK-916 and the copper as HK-917. I sent a silver to NGC to be graded and the Copper to be conserved and graded since it had some residue from being kept in an old style holder. The silver came back graded, but the copper was cleaned and then sent back as "ineligible". I called NGC and the said they had seen silver ones before, but have never seen one of the Coppers so they cannot grade it. There were only 1,000 of them made in 1953. They said if I can come up with some sort of information showing what the medal should look like, then they will grade it. The problem is I cannot find an image anywhere. I have searched the copyright records from 1953 since the Rev. Frank Barnhill copyrighted the medal, but the old records do not include photos. Any ideas? These are photos of the medal before the cleaning.

I can't read the name of the city on the medal but if you can ... try contacting that city's historical society or a reference librarian in that city.

Since the designer was a reverend, there may be a church still in existence that might have some historical information on this.

The historical society and the church might have similar medals -- maybe. It doesn't hurt to ask.

Good luck.

Thank you for the Historical society idea! I do have a call in to the church which still exists and references the medals on their website.
Rest in Peace

Great to hear the church is still there. I'll bet they can get their hands on what you need. I wouldn't be surprised if there we some good stories to go along with it. It'd be nice to have those with the medal.
