How many guys have to stop a set of coins because of the keys being so expensive ? I'm one for sure. I can't even finish my 1909-pds to 1955-pds LINCOLNS, just because of that darn S-VDB . same with my Mercury dimes. the 16-D, and 21-P & D and many more different U.S. sets that I am unable to finish because the empty holes cost too much. Some members might say : just buy ultra low grade hole fillers . Na, that's not my style as most of my coins are high grade CIRCS.

When you collect a series, nothing says your collection has to be complete. For many series, completion is just about impossible (Barber Dimes, Bust quarters, Seated dollars, etc.). In fact, even a complete US type collection is pretty much impossible.

I have had my Morgan collection down to 5 coins for about five years now. I have switched to CBQ's now and those five Morgans are not really on my radar anymore. They will be back on my radar whenever I win the lottery! My Lincoln set is complete and I found a VF problem free 09 svdb to complete it. I settled for a decent problem free 16d in Good condition for my Mercury dimes. I probably would have never completed these if I had went for the AU-MS grades.

Nothing ever "stops" me. There may be speed bumps out there but those only slow you down. If I want something bad enough I figure out how to get it, eventually.

I agree with davec...I would have never thought I would have had a VF30 09svdb 10 years ago but I figured out a way. Just set a goal of what you want and the condition and put a little money away every month until you get there.

Keep up the faith. It took me forty years to do so, but I finally got a 1916 D to complete my Mercury dimes. I followed it up with both 1942/1 dimes. For years I thought they all were impossible. I still haven't pulled the trigger on a 1909 SVDB though, and maybe never will.

I well know what you mean. I've been looking in all my change for a 1913 Liberty Head Nickel for a long, long time.

Well my 1916d and 1921's Mercury dimes are AG3's, 1877 Indian Head cent is G4, 1909s vdb Lincoln and some of the others in the set are G to VG, the 3 keys for the Shield nickels are G's but all my sets are "average circulated" (junk silver looking) sets so they kinda "fit" with the others. I knew when I started them that I would not be able to do any better and it took decades to slowly fill my Dansco albums, and I still have several I haven't filled yet. I keep plugging along decade after decade. That is why I have never started a Morgan dollar album. I know there is NO way to get those impossible key dates. But I don't think this hobby would be near as much fun without some challenges. Just my humble opinion.

As some of the others are saying, with some planning ...some of those Key dates can be bought. Some, like the 1895 Morgan I feel will always be out of my budget. For me I have decided I do not need to fill every hole in every Dansco I have. Thinking I would need to, in the past, stopped me from starting some sets. Recently I purchased all three Barber albums, Large cent and two cent/three cent nickel album. There are more than a few coins I will never fill in these. I will be happy if I can fill 90% of the holes. Some of the keys I need, are sitting in some friends collections. They are getting ... Older, so there is a chance I might get a good deal on some of the keys I need. If they decide to sell ... They are hinting they might someday. I know if I went out and bought some of the keys I need, the two guys I know would decide to sell. They are sitting on some nice 1916 D Merc's, 1885 and 1886 V nickels. Also 4 of the 5 Morgan's I need.

Lots of good feedback here from members who successfully achieved their collecting goals as well as others who simply acknowledge the fact they may never get it. For a YN, this is great to read.

I figure if prices haven't gone crazy by the time I need those "psycho" coins to fill the holes I will have collected other stuff I will be able to find a way to trade for them. Still getting everything at face value now and still finding stuff slowly but surely.

I have thinking ... Should have asked. Which key dares.
The modern coins, or I call the presidents, can be done. Lincoln, Jefferson, Roosevelt, Washington, Kennedy and Ike.
The Lincoln would be the hardest. The 1909 S vdb has been coming down the past few years. I have recently seen nice XF/AU coins in the $1000 range. The 1922 no D would cost that, or more. I feel more collectors choose not to fill that 1922 no D spot.
Many collectors may never choose to spend $1000 on a coin. There is nothing wrong with that. I think that should not stop some one from collecting a series.
But with planning most collectors can figure out a way, even if it takes many years.
I work part time, so I can add to my collection. I have four times spent over $1000 on a coin, for my own collection. It does get a little easier each time I do. But it is still a very big event for me to spend that much.
I have so many sets going, there is no way I could do them all in high grade coins. So I accept lower grade coins, so that I can get more holes filled. Because I like having sets.
It also seems once I get a set complete I start upgrading to better grades .... when possible.
