Can someone explain what happened here?

Peru---2-Centavos,-1946,-Lots-Of-Doubling

1. It looks like a doubled die with slight clockwise rotation. Doubling is most evident in the rays bottom left and ER of PERUANA.

2. The date 1946 has strong doubling in the 19 which I take to be re-punched numbers, while the 46 is crisp and singular. Note the rotation of the strong 1 while 9 is doubled but shifted left.

Opinions are gratefully solicited

Looks like they've tidied up the die, repunched the filled letters and numbers and re-tooled the bad parts. Just a bit of maintenance but lovely error :)

UKPH - thank you for the respponse. Does the doubling of the rays indicate a doubled die along with the repunching?

I believe it is a DD only, not relaunching also. The first 2 numbers were likely on the hub and boubled at the same time.

Thank you for replying. What is relaunching? And if it is only a DD why are the numbers 19 doubled and 46 not? Bear with me, I am new to lots of error situations.

Sorry I meant repunching, curse you auto correct! If you have a hub to make dies with and the first 2 digits are already on it the n they are part of the die and can be doubles along with the rest of the design, since the hub already had the 19 on it, they were doubled with the rest of the die, since the 46 was added later in a separate stage of the die making process, they were not doubled.
