Just a question; So last night I was told that this bill was supposed to have a "mintage" (sorry I don't know the correct terminology) of 20 million notes; I figured that if someone told me a mintage, it has to be recorded somewhere so I went digging... I found THIS. It reads that the total number of notes to be minted is fourty million. Now, I am curious enough to gain perspective; Does anyone here know how many 1967 commemorative $1 bills were minted? Does anyone know the approximate mintage of the 'regular' polymer notes to date? I have three or four of these that I've found, and am skeptical about any of this polymer stuff having any long term value - I will hold on to one or two for myself, but anything beyond that will depend on my perceived "worth" or rarity... Thanks in advance for speaking up!

Considering that roughly 1/4 of the commemrative $1 notes were issued (12 mil versus 40 mil), and probably every one of the $1 notes has survived, that doesn't sound good for people hoping to make a couple bucks on hoarding the commemorative $20 bill's... I cannot recall everything I've heard/read, were the commemorative $1 bills intended for circulation? IIRC they were sold for $1 from one of the banks with the intent of them being keep-sakes ~ but many found their way into circulation. /\ /\ Is that correct?

Instead of minted, the word is printed. For a collection I think a note or two won't hurt. But you'll be far better off with notes that have large runs to try and collect special serial numbers

Haven't seen the polymer ones in circulation, but I'd be happy to keep a few.

You had me thinking you were joking, and I mis-typed... so I googled it. http://www.bankofcanada.ca/banknote...ies/polymer/Yup, I typed it right. I know you have a US half dollar as your avatar(?) - but it says you're in Canada - if that's the case, how could you NOT see polymer notes? The paper stuff is quite rare to find still in circulation - it's all meltable plastic garbage.

Never has the bank of Canada printed a polymer $1 note for circulation.
I think he's seen many polymer fives tens and twenties....

I think petersun actually meant that he hasn't seen a commemorative 20 in circulation.
Only the hologram strip is different so 95% of Canadians will never notice that they're a limited edition anyway....

Yes- Both the 1967 serial number and the "1867-1967" in place of the serial number were issued for circulation.

There are going to be 40 million of these notes, other than special serial #, it will never be worth more than face, at least the 1967 notes are going for 2 to 3 bucks

You are exactly right...
I was talking with a rep from one coin shop ... They bought a brick (1000 notes) and have them listed at $25 each... any that don't sell after 1 year are just going to be used as cash at face value.
I personally put 10 away... I imagine a 1-3 for my own collection and the reamainder I may use to trade with others... or give away to a YN if I ever have a table and have to make change.

I think Canada's approaching 150th anniversary may increase demand for the 1967 Centennial $1 notes. At the least, it may serve to bring attention to their existence.
But as far as the $20 celebrating the Queen's reign, the image is so subtle and considering very few Canadians attach any significance to the monarchy let alone how long she's ruled another country, I can't see it ever being a hot ticket item aside from Cdn banknote or serial number collectors. 40 million of the notes should be more than enough to meet their needs...

The other odd fact talking to currency collectors at GTA shows is that know one seems to care much of the new polymer notes. Most comments are they are ugly and generally no appeal for collecting
