I have acquired 4 error coins from a friend . 3 of them are badly off-centered and the other seems to be a nickel stamped onto a penny planchet. I weighed it and it weighs as much as a penny from the same year. I was just wondering if this is common and what errors like these are worth. Edited by natews90 10/29/2015 7:14 pm

Quote: The guy I got them from had a relative that worked at the mint in the 70s and 80s and he used to take the error coins home. Are you sure the person you bought them from wanted this sort of information shared publicly? Nonetheless, 5c struck on 1c planchets are not uncommon from the 1970s and 1980s, value depends on grade and how much original mint lustre (red) is preserved. They typically sell for anywhere from $250 to $450.

Photos would be most helpful in off center coins, generally 50% or more will be worth more than 10% and things like colour on the pennies

Beware of homemade errors, if you can post pics the experts here can help you avoid falling into that trap, loudmouthing in a restaurant seems an unusual method for selling genuine errors.

Question...why are 5 cent struck on one cent planchets not uncommon in the the 70's and 80's? Were production controls inadequate during those 2 decades or was RCM security poor which in turn allowed back door jobs to "escape" with relative ease? Just wondering.... Oh, and thanks for sharing those pics! Very nice error coins!

The Hull mint was almost at the time a made to order, lots of this type of errors and some really fantastic ones. You just don't see many recent errors, still cool to see.
