just wondering when it comes to "plastic" flips, capsules, slabs and binder pages if there are any other chemicals (other than PVC) that are bad for long term storage ?

I've recently run across PCCB brands self-slabs with NGC style washers (rather than foam inserts that tend to "pillow" over the edges of the coin) and although they claim to be "safe" I am considering sending them out for infra-red spectroscopy analysis (just need to know what else to test for before deciding if it's worth spending the money).

alternatively, if anyone knows of a safe slab that uses either NGC or PCGS style washers (rather than foam inserts) please list it here or in the supplies forum.

I've used these: http://www.air-tites.com/Coin_World....Vjf3TLerS00
The inserts are not foam but rather an inert polyethylene (rubbery) material. If the one you are considering is from (Not Allowed) you would do well to have it tested before long term storage.

Why would you pay to have an IR run?

with my extremely limited knowledge (google) this seemed to be the simplest of tests to see if PVC was present in the samples. however I would take your advice over google's any day :)

BH1964, yes I've see those. if possible I would like to be able to see the edges of the coins.

Here is the simplest test for PVC.

Put it in water. If it floats (without an air bubble or surface tension), it is not PVC no matter what.

If it sinks, then we need to light it on fire (safety first).

If it has an awful smell of hydrochloric acid, has a green tint to the flame, produces smoke, produces a char, does not drip molten plastic, it can't be PVC.

Here is the long version of that.
